This is a project that's very close to my heart. Having been a kid in the 80's I'm openly nostalgic about nearly everything we had in those years... from the music to the colors, to the big hairs and of course.... the skating!

I also love comic books and I think it would be very cool if there was a comic series about skater girls, so I imagined what my own cover would look like and here is the result. I hope you enjoy!
I created everything from the character's look to the lettering and cover design. Below are a few details I really enjoyed working on:
And here is the full cover design, for your enjoyment ;)
Unlike most of my work, this one started as a traditional pencil drawing on paper. I like to sketch it as close as possible to my vision, as in this way I can see early on what'll work or not. This is why my sketches aren't sometimes all that sketchy!
One of the steps of my process that I enjoy the most is creating lineart. I just love what a steady hand and a brush with texture and pressure sensitivity can do.
Wouldn't it be precious to see this in print?
Here are some of the references I used for this project. Usually I form the idea first in my mind and start sketching from that vision. Then when something is unclear, like a detail in the clothing or a particular wave the hair has in this or that position, that's when I go looking for references to improve my design.
